New Zealand grants student visas to Pakistani applicants who meet three requirements: an offer of place from an approved education provider, enough money to live on for the length of the course, and a genuine intention to study.
Why students from Pakistan choose New Zealand
New Zealand’s Post-Study Work Visa gives bachelor’s and master’s graduates three years of open work rights, with no job offer required to apply. Universities keep smaller class sizes than many in Australia or the UK. Living costs in cities outside Auckland, such as Dunedin, Hamilton, or Palmerston North, run lower than in the country’s largest city.
Which visa applies to you
Most Pakistani students need the Fee Paying Student Visa. It covers university degrees, diplomas, and English language courses that run longer than three months. If your study plan involves several courses back to back at the same institution, for example a foundation year followed by a bachelor’s degree, apply for the Pathway Student Visa instead. It covers up to three consecutive programmes on one visa, so you skip a fresh application between each one.
What Immigration New Zealand checks
Your application needs to show:
- An offer of place from an approved education provider, or confirmation of enrolment if you’re continuing a programme
- Enough money to cover your living costs and tuition
- English language ability, if your course requires it
- An acceptable standard of health
- Good character
- A genuine intention to study and comply with your visa conditions
An immigration officer weighs your application as a whole. Meeting each requirement on its own doesn’t guarantee approval; officers also check that your study plan matches your academic background and career direction.
How much money you need
INZ sets minimum living-cost figures separate from tuition:
- NZD $20,000 per year for university, diploma, or English language courses of one year or longer
- NZD $1,667 per month for courses shorter than a year
- NZD $17,000 per year for school-level study, Years 1 to 13
Add tuition on top of these numbers. A course that costs NZD $25,000 a year needs NZD $45,000 in accessible funds before you apply.
Pakistan sits outside INZ’s Funds Transfer Scheme, the ANZ Bank programme that lets students from China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam move money through a verified channel. As a Pakistani applicant, you’ll show your funds through one of these instead:
- Your own bank statements covering the past six months
- An education loan sanction letter, with details of the security, repayment terms, and interest
- A sponsor’s bank statements plus a signed Financial Undertaking for a Student (INZ 1014) form, if someone outside New Zealand is paying your way
Documents to prepare
- Valid passport, with at least one blank page and validity beyond your intended stay
- Offer of place or confirmation of enrolment
- Evidence of tuition fee payment, or funds to pay it
- Bank statements, loan documents, or sponsor evidence covering the amount above
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- English test results (IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT), if your course requires them
- Passport-size photos meeting INZ’s photo specifications
- Medical certificate and chest X-ray, if required
- Police certificate, if required
- A statement of purpose explaining your course choice, why New Zealand, and your plans after graduation
The application process
- Get your offer of place. Apply to a New Zealand university, polytechnic, or private training establishment, and pay any deposit it asks for before it issues an offer letter.
- Open an account on Immigration New Zealand’s online portal and start your student visa application.
- Pay the visa fee and upload your documents.
- Book biometrics at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre in Pakistan. INZ sends instructions on this after you submit your application.
- Complete a medical exam, if required, through an INZ panel physician such as IOM Pakistan in Islamabad.
- Wait for a decision. Many applicants receive an Approval in Principle (AIP) first: INZ has approved the application in principle and wants a paid tuition receipt before granting the visa.
- Pay your tuition fees and upload the receipt within your AIP deadline of 10 days.
- Receive your eVisa, tied to your passport number instead of a paper sticker. Save a digital copy and print one to carry when you travel.
What it costs
A Fee Paying Student Visa costs NZD $850 in total: a $485 application fee, a $265 immigration levy, and a $100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy where it applies. INZ charges this fee whether it approves or declines your application, so a complete, accurate file on your first attempt saves you both time and money.
How long it takes
INZ decides most student visa applications within two to eight weeks. Pathway Student Visas move faster; INZ finalises 80% of them within five weeks. Applications submitted between October and February, New Zealand’s peak intake season, take longer. Apply at least three months before your course starts to leave room for delays or requests for extra documents.
Medical exam and police certificate
Pakistan isn’t on INZ’s list of low-incidence tuberculosis countries. If your course runs six months or longer, you’ll need a medical certificate and a chest X-ray from an INZ panel physician; IOM Pakistan in Islamabad handles this for most applicants. Courses longer than 12 months trigger the medical requirement regardless of the TB list.
A police certificate becomes mandatory once your total intended stay in New Zealand reaches 24 months, across one visa or several. Get it from Pakistani police and from any other country where you’ve lived five years or more since turning 17. INZ treats certificates as expired after six months, so time this step close to your application date.
Work rights while you study
Students enrolled in a course at NZQF Level 7 or higher, or a course of 14 weeks or longer, can work up to 25 hours a week during term time and full-time during scheduled breaks. Your visa grant letter states your specific work entitlement; check it once your visa arrives.
After you graduate
Graduates with a bachelor’s degree or higher (NZQF Level 7 and above) qualify for an open Post-Study Work Visa valid for up to three years. No job offer is required to apply, and the visa lets you work for any employer in any role while you build your career or apply for residence through New Zealand’s skilled migrant pathways.
Why applications get declined
Immigration officers decline student visa applications from Pakistan most often for:
- Funds that don’t match the source claimed, such as a bank balance that jumped shortly before the application with no explanation
- A study plan that doesn’t connect to your academic background or career direction
- Missing or inconsistent documents across the application
- An institution or course level that doesn’t match your stated goals
Build your application around a clear, honest story: why this course, why this institution, and what you plan to do with the qualification. Officers read hundreds of applications a week. Specific answers stand out faster than a generic personal statement.
Timeline: what to do and when
- 4 to 6 months before: research institutions, sit your English test if required, apply for admission
- 3 months before: gather financial documents, secure your offer of place, open your Immigration Online account
- 2 to 3 months before: submit your visa application, complete biometrics and your medical exam
- After Approval in Principle: pay tuition and upload your receipt within the 10-day deadline
- Before departure: confirm your eVisa, arrange accommodation and travel insurance, book your flight
FAQ
Do I need IELTS for a New Zealand student visa?

How much bank balance do I need for a New Zealand student visa from Pakistan?
NZD $20,000 per year for most tertiary and English-language courses, on top of tuition. Courses shorter than a year need NZD $1,667 per month instead. Show this through your own bank statements, an education loan sanction letter, or a sponsor’s evidence plus a signed INZ 1014 form.
